Embrace your intuitive beauty with practical applications
Hello, beautiful women!
I’m Angela, a dedicated face yoga teacher with over seven years of experience guiding others to embrace their natural beauty and achieve radiant skin. It has been a journey that brought me to face yoga primarily because of the nature of my skin’s response to sunbathing in my teen years. In the 80’s I really enjoyed bathing in the sun. Lying the sun warmed my soul and I felt beautiful with a golden tan. I even went to tanning beds, which were the rage for convenience because I was too busy in college and working to lay by the pool at my apartment!
Check out the photo of me getting my daughter to college and how time has taken a toll on my skin. However, I do want to highlight that it’s not too bad! This is because I have spent most of my adult life hiding from the sun by wearing hats and large sun glasses. I also lived in Seattle for ten years, and that overcast rainy lifestyle truly helps the skin! Although, you do need to take care with Vitamin D deficiency.
Fast forward 30 years and I am now doing my best to attend to the aging grace of getting older. It isn’t always easy. But like everything, it is a process of self-awareness and self-acceptance that will bring us into a state of a balanced mindset about these kinds of things. As someone who’s seen the transformative power of face yoga firsthand, I’m thrilled to share how this ancient practice can help rejuvenate sun-damaged skin and minimize fine lines and wrinkles. Today, I’ll also weave in some wisdom from Ayurveda to enrich your skincare journey.
Understanding Sun Damage and Its Impact
As we age, our skin becomes more susceptible to the effects of sun exposure. Sun damage can manifest as discoloration, fine lines, wrinkles, and loss of elasticity. But don’t worry, your skin’s capacity for healing is remarkable, and face yoga can be a powerful tool in your skincare arsenal
How Face Yoga Helps
Face yoga is more than just a trend; it’s a practice rooted in ancient wisdom and modern science. Because I have a history of sunbathing in my youth, I am now 53 years old and struggle with the effects of wider pores, crepey skin, and what feels to be an exacerbated aging process.
I have found that face yoga offers a buffer and has literally not only slowed the process of aging, but has reversed some of the signs of discolorations, crows feet, and crepiness at the naso-labial lines, which are common on sun damaged skin. I am sharing some photos of my journey. Take notice of how much good lighting comes to play with our appearance. Don’t let social media fool you into thinking that everyone looks magically flawless! Actually, I guess it is a little bit like magic to do face yoga and see powerful results with an improved appearance!
Here’s how it benefits sun-damaged skin:
- Enhanced Circulation: Face yoga boosts blood flow, delivering essential nutrients and oxygen to the skin. This increased circulation can accelerate the healing process of sun-damaged areas.
- Collagen Stimulation: By exercising facial muscles, you encourage collagen production, which helps restore skin’s firmness and elasticity.
- Lymphatic Drainage: Gentle face yoga movements promote the removal of toxins and reduce puffiness, giving your skin a refreshed appearance.
- Muscle Toning: Strengthening facial muscles helps maintain a youthful contour and minimizes sagging.
Recommended Face Yoga Poses for Sun-Damaged Skin
Do all of these poses daily in a series of 3 repetitions, in 3 sets, twice daily. Usually in the morning and evening at skin care time. This is a great time to add a habit like face yoga, so you can ensure that you will actually do it. Who has time for another thing, right?
- Forehead Smoother
- How to Do It: Place your fingers on your forehead and gently pull your skin smooth. Raise your eyebrows as high as possible and hold for 5-10 seconds before relaxing.
- Benefits: This pose helps reduce the appearance of horizontal forehead lines and calms tense muscles.
- Eye Smoother
- How to Do It: Use your ring fingers to gently press under your eyes while looking up. Hold for a few seconds and then release.
- Benefits: Reduces fine lines around the eyes and alleviates puffiness.
- Cheek Lift
- How to Do It: Smile widely, then use your fingers to lift your cheeks towards your eyes. Hold for a few seconds before relaxing.
- Benefits: Tones and firms the cheek area, helping to lift and rejuvenate.
- Jawline Sculptor
- How to Do It: Tilt your head back slightly, place the tip of the tongue on the roof of the mouth and push your lower jaw forward. Hold for a few seconds and then return to the starting position.
- Benefits: Strengthens the muscles along the jawline and reduces the appearance of a double chin.
- Neck Tightener
- How to Do It: Sit or stand with a straight back. Tilt your head back and press your tongue against the roof of your mouth. Hold for a few seconds.
- Benefits: Firms the skin on your neck, reducing fine lines and sagging.
Use end of season fruit and vegetables along with cooling ingredients like a yoga-based dip to clear the skin from the inside out. Radish and cucumbers offer a cooling and clearing sensation to the gut. Beginning an end of summer detox can refine the appearance of the skin, and allow better blood creation to feed the skin with good sound vascular movement of blood.
Ayurvedic Insights for Glowing Skin
In Ayurveda, the health of your skin reflects the balance of your body’s doshas (energies). To support your face yoga practice, consider these Ayurvedic principles:
- Diet: Incorporate foods that balance your doshas and support skin health. Hydrating foods like cucumbers, and antioxidant-rich fruits like berries, are excellent for rejuvenation.
- Hydration: Drink plenty of warm water infused with herbs like turmeric or ginger. This helps flush out toxins and keeps your skin hydrated from within.
- Herbal Treatments: Use Ayurvedic herbs such as neem and aloe vera, known for their skin-healing properties. They can be applied topically or consumed in supplement form.
- Daily Routine: Establish a consistent daily routine that includes practices such as self-massage with nourishing oils (like sesame or jojoba oil) to enhance circulation and keep your skin supple.
Additional Tips for Radiant Skin
- Sun Protection: Always use a broad-spectrum sunscreen to protect your skin from further damage and support the healing process.
- Moisturize: Use a high-quality moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated and plump. Ingredients like hyaluronic acid and vitamin C are particularly beneficial. Be careful with vitamin C alternate days of use, as it can be drying for skin over 50!
- Rest: Ensure you get plenty of restful sleep. Tucking in a little early can help your skin repairs itself while you sleep, so prioritize good sleep hygiene.
Consistent practice is key.
The only way to benefit from face yoga is to just do it! Combined with Ayurvedic wisdom, face yoga, offers a holistic approach to attend to sun damage and nurturing your skin. By incorporating these practices into your routine, you can promote a youthful glow and embrace the natural beauty within you! Sounds good, right?
Remember, consistency is key, and taking a mindful approach to your skincare will yield the best results. Here’s to your radiant and rejuvenated self!
