As a certified Face Yoga Method instructor and recognized expert in the field, I’ve witnessed firsthand how consistent facial exercises can transform not just the appearance of the face, but also address underlying inflammation issues that many struggle with daily. Myself included!
Facial inflammation manifests in various ways—from broken capillaries and redness around the nose to puffy nasolabial folds and sagging jowls. While many turn to expensive creams and invasive procedures, face yoga offers a natural, accessible alternative that works from the inside out. As you massage your facial muscles, the blood flows more evenly with restored circulation. It can take about 4 – 6 weeks to see improvements, but it is very possible and does work for all of the clients I have worked with.
Understanding Facial Inflammation
Before diving into specific exercises, it’s important to understand what are some of the root causes of facial inflammation:
- Stress and tension: When we’re stressed, our body releases cortisol, which can trigger inflammation.
- Poor circulation: Stagnant blood flow can lead to fluid buildup and puffiness.
- Environmental factors: Pollution, harsh weather, and allergies can irritate sensitive facial skin.
- Diet and lifestyle: Certain foods, alcohol, and lack of sleep can exacerbate inflammation.
Face yoga addresses these issues by improving circulation, releasing tension, and strengthening the facial muscles that support our skin. Try these three moves and let me know how they work for you!
Targeted Face Yoga Techniques for Inflammation
1. For Overall Facial De-puffing

The Lymphatic Drainage Tapping Exercise
- Using clean hands allow yourself to touch forehead and begin tapping.
- Apply gentle pressure and continue tapping all the way down the face and neck.
- Move the hands around the ears and tap, tap, tap around the ears in a downward motion.
- Continue down the neck, and then tap down the sides of the body, including the armpits and breast area, moving everything to the sides of the body and move the hands in a downward motion.
- Finish by tapping all around the head and the back of the neck and then the same motion of moving everything to the sides of the body and move the hands in a downward fashin.
- You can repeat or do this again at the end of your practice.
This massage technique stimulates the lymphatic system, helping your body process and eliminate excess fluid that causes puffiness.
2. For Broken Capillaries and Redness Around the Nose

The Balloon Breath
- Sit comfortably with a straight spine
- Take a deep breath through your nose
- Fill your cheeks with air, creating pressure but keeping lips sealed
- Hold for 20 seconds while gently tapping your fingers across your cheeks and nose area
- Slowly release the air through your mouth
- Repeat 3 times
This exercise improves circulation while gently stimulating the capillaries around the nose, helping to strengthen them over time and reduce redness.
3. For Puffy Nasolabial Folds

The Cheek Lifter
- Place your fingers on the nasolabial folds (the lines running from nose to mouth)
- Open your mouth to form an ‘O’ shape
- Curl your upper lip over your teeth
- Smile widely while pulling upward at the hairline.
- Hold for 30 seconds while taking deep breaths
- Release and repeat 5 times
This exercise targets the muscles around the nasolabial folds, helping to lift and firm this area while encouraging lymphatic drainage to reduce puffiness.
This powerful exercise works the often-neglected muscles under the chin and along the jawline, creating natural lift and definition while encouraging drainage of excess fluid.
Creating a Sustainable Face Yoga Practice
I hear from so many that it is hard to establish a practice of face yoga. Gosh, I can relate. It’s hard to establish so many other good habits which help us beautify from the inside out like: eating healthy, hydrating, restoring gut health, exercise, and good skin care habits. Here’s the thing, consistency is key! I recommend:
- 10-15 minutes of face yoga daily, ideally morning and evening
- Practicing in front of a mirror initially to ensure proper technique
- Pairing with deep, mindful breathing to maximize oxygen flow to facial tissues
- Staying hydrated to support your body’s natural detoxification processes
- Being gentle—never pull or stretch the skin aggressively
The Face Yoga Method Difference
As a certified instructor in the Face Yoga Method, I emphasize the importance of proper technique and a holistic approach. Unlike generic facial exercises, the Face Yoga Method incorporates:
- Targeted muscle activation based on facial anatomy
- Mindful breathing techniques that enhance results
- Attention to both strengthening and relaxation
- Customized routines based on individual needs
Final Thoughts
Face yoga isn’t just about aesthetic improvements—it’s a form of self-care that addresses inflammation in a way that YOU can do. You don’t have to buy a special cream for this. Instead, taking time with face yoga to improve circulation, release tension, and strengthen facial muscles, these exercises create an environment where inflammation naturally subsides.
While results vary from person to person, most of my clients report noticing reduced puffiness within days! I also learn consistently from my students that more significant improvements in redness, definition, and overall skin quality when paired with an anti-inflammatory diet, establish good sleep and exercise routines as will can move the 4-6 weeks that I outlined above for seeing results to move that forward within 2-4 weeks of consistent practice! This is manageable and fast if you offer yourself a dynamic approach to supporting your health and beauty overall with healthy lifestyle habits.
